Reading skills: 4 primary modes of writing: Narrative mode, Descriptive mode, Expository mode, Persuasive Mode. Modes of Organization: Comparison-contrast, Examples, Chronological order, Classification or Division (categories), Steps in a process, Cause and Effect, and Listing.

   General Goals: Teach the kids how to examine some modes of writing such as, Narrative and Descriptive Mode.

   Vocab Words from Picture Book:

Barren: unproductive; unfruitful
Province: an administrative division or unit of a country.
Milky Way: the diffuse band of light stretching across the night sky that consists of millions of faint stars, nebulae, etc, within our Galaxy
Disguises: to change the appearance or guise of so as to conceal identity or mislead, as by means of deceptive garb
Elegant: tastefully fine or luxurious in dress, style, design, etc.
Jade: either of two minerals, jadeite or nephrite, sometimes green, highly esteemed as an ornamental stone for carvings, jewelry, etc.
Embroidery: theart of working raised and ornamental designs in threads of silk, cotton, gold, silver, or other material, upon any woven fabric, leather, paper, etc., with a needle.

Agenda For Tuesday June 14, 2011:

  Get Picture book, markers, paper, note cards, name tag.  Once materials are gathered then wait to meet partner.  Introduce yourself to buddy and explain the lesson. After lesson is explained then read book.  Read one page and let Buddy read the other then switch off. After book is finished then assemble materials and allow student to understand vocabulary words. Then reflect off the book and apply the lesson of the book.  At last Clarify if there was any questions.

General Goals: The General Idea to teach the students is to allow them to determine the main idea of the story and find the authors purpose.

Vocabulary Words from Picture Book:

Emperor: the male sovereign or supreme ruler of an empire: the emperors of Rome.
Palace: the official residence of a king, queen, bishop, or other sovereign or exalted personage.
Imperial: characterizing
the rule or authority of a sovereign state over its dependencies.
Ao dai: a costume composed of a long tunic with side slits over wide trousers, worn by Vietnamese
women as traditional dress.
Ba: Grandmother
Lotus: any aquatic plant of

Tone (recognize an authors tone, familiar with ironic devices, and satirical devices)

Picture book: No Dinner: The story of the old woman and the pumpkin by Jessica Souhami

General Goals:  The general Goal of this story is to teach the tone in the book and explain and apply figurative language. 

Vocabulary Words from Picture Book:

Pumpkin
: A round large fruit with a thick orange-skinned rind, dry flesh, and many seed, cooked and eaten as a vegetable, or in sweet dishes.
Skinny: thin, especially in an unappealing or unhealthy way
Food: Material that provides living things with the nutrients they need for energy and growth
Forest: A large area of land covered in trees and other plants growing close together, or the trees growing on it
Dinner: the main meal of the day, usually eaten in the evening or sometimes in the early afternoon
